The pleasant city with cold weather is well known in the world with the annual Tazaungdaing festival.
Once you hear the Taunggyi Tazaungdaing, the fire balloons will immediately take place in your mind palace. This famous Taunggyi Fire Balloon Festival has been celebrated since 60 years ago. People pay homage to the Buddha with candles and other lights.
Taunggyi citizens have to prepare for a month before the festival. There are different adornments for the fire balloon festival. One is the animal shaped called Ayoke for afternoon. And the other ones are called Sein Na Pan and Nya Mee Gyi adorned at night. During the daytime, they launch the lovely animal shaped balloons such as Elephant, Horse, Bear, Rooster, Pigeon and Fish into the sky. At night, they release the balloon with candles called Sein Na Pan. It is approximately 45ft by 30ft. And it was decorated in small lanterns and fireworks around it. Nya Mee Gyi balloon is painted elaborately and there are no candles on them. And the creative and elaborate beauty of the fire balloons at competitions makes the whole world know about the Taunggyi Tazaungdaing Festival.
Watching the golden glow of sparks floating into the night sky is indeed a pleasurable experience to enjoy in Taunggyi. You can also walk around the night markets in the cool weather.
When you at the Fire Balloon Festival, you can visit Shwe Phone Pwint Pagoda. From there, you can fully enjoy the view of the whole Taunggyi city from the beautiful Shan Hill. Before you go to the Fire Festival at night, you can visit Inle Lake during the day time. The lake is famous for seagulls feeding, floating markets, floating gardens and unique one-leg padding of fishermen. The village also offers other famous attractions such as Phaung Daw U Pagoda, Pindaya Cave, Mya Tha Bait Lake (waterfall and blue lagoon) and Main Ma Ye Mountain (Brave Woman Mountain) which is full of pagodas. There are amazing views of sunflower, sesame and strawberry fields along the road. If you still get time, you can try the Shan taste at Taunggyi market.

Shan Noodles
You can find many good Shan Noodle shops at Taunggyi market. This sticky rice noodle is prepared with chicken and tomato sauce, offering a simple yet authentic taste. The local Shan pickle really matches well with the noodle.
Shan Tofu Nway and Tofu Fries
Once you have tried these Shan dishes, you will never forget their tastes. This sticky rice noodles in thick soup is definitely everyone’s favorite. The yellow fried tofu is also a light and tasty dish to have.
Hin Htoke
The popular morning snack, Hin Htoke is also a must try Shan cuisine in Taunggyi. This sticky steamed rice is cooked with rice powder, ju myit root and wrapped with a banana leaf.
Mon Nyin Jin, Onion Jin, Tofu Jin
Shan State has plenty of radishes and onions. You can buy the fermented dishes of radishes and onions with much cheaper prices there. The freshly pickled white radish leaves (Mon Nyin Jin) is a popular souvenir bought from Taunggyi. The Tofu Jin lovers prefer the one from Taunggyi the most.
Soybean
Shan Soybean is another special souvenir for visitors to take back home. You can have different versions such as grill, fry, salad or mash. All are delicious.
