April fool’s Day is celebrated all around the world as a day filled with practical jokes and silliness. It is celebrated every year on April 1 by playing jokes and fun. The jokes and victims are called April fools.
The origins of the day are uncertain. Most people think it stems from Pope Gregory (8). In 1582, he wanted his new Gregorian calendar to replace the old Julian Calendar. This called for New Year’s Day to be celebrated on January 1 instead of the end of March. But some people apparently didn’t get the memo and continued to celebrate New Year’s Day on April (1) However, others think April Fools’ Day stems from the age when people used to hold spring festivals marking the end of winter with ‘mayhem and misrule’, according to the Museum of Hoaxes. The Ancient Roman festival of Hilaria celebrated the resurrection of the god Attis and involved dressing in disguise. Many other cultures have held renewal festivals in Europe around April 1.
Although we can’t really say how or when April Fools’ Day got its start, people the world over still celebrate it with happily and fun year in and year out. Family members, friends, neighbors, may try to tickle your funny practical jokes of some kind. Pranks can be quite simple and fun. Eventually, other people began to make fun of these backward “fools” by sending them to look for things that did not exist or tricking them into believing something false.
In France April Fool’s Day is known as April Fish day and traditionally, people will tape a picture of a fish on the back of unsuspecting people and wait for the transgression to be discovered and then fun together. April Fool’s Day celebration in Scotland is pretty simple and so much fun because of throwing a sack of flour to an unsuspecting friends.
Although many countries and cultures celebrate the day at different times and in different ways, all of them enjoy playing clever pranks on their friends and family.
